This remote province is emerging as a major commercial crossroads for trade between Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. It is a forgotten place, but once the roads south are finished, it will once again be properly plugged into the rest of the country. Much of Stung Treng’s traffic travels by water, as several major rivers traverse the province, including Tonle Kong. Tonle San, Tonle Srepok and of course, the Mekong. However, the road are improving and NH19 east to Ratanakiri is upgraded.

Visitor attractions are extremely limited for now, but as tourism take off elsewhere in Cambodia, it is possible that boat trip up Mekong’s tributaries, to places like Siem Paang, will be a different way to see some remote areas. The population of Stung Treng includes several minority groups and the western chunk of massive Virachey National Park, accessible from Siem Pang – two factors that suggest there is some tourism potential as the province’s infrastructure develops. Part of its problem is being sandwiched between Ratanakiri, one of Cambodia’s most interesting provinces, and southern Laos, an area rich in attractions.

The quiet capital city of Stung Treng has experienced a surge in visitor numbers with the opening of Cambodian – Lao border just 50km north of town, and while there aren’t a whole lot of reasons to stick around, it makes a sensible overnight stop on the overland route to Ratanakiri. It is a bustling little trading town located on the banks of Tonle San, which flows into the mighty Mekong on the western outskirts of the city limits. Some locals call Tonle San Tonle Kong or Tonle Sekong as these two rivers merge 10km east of town. Chinese contractors are currently constructing a bridge across this river, which will form a key link in new road between Kratie and the Lao border.

Stung Treng Woman Development Center (SWDC), Stung Treng Province
About 4 kilometers from the city center, the SWDC is a local NGO that provides support to the local population through literacy, health, and vocational training programs.

The vocational training focuses on silk weaving, and the center is a fascinating place to visit and learn how silk is turned into scarves, dresses, purses and any number of beautiful items.

The silk itself is not from Cambodia. It comes from either Thailand or Vietnam, and then woven at the center. They are looking for funding to start a silkworm breeding project to produce the raw silk themselves, so drop a donation if you like.

Mekong Blue is the brand of products produced at the SWDC center, and they are fair trade, meaning some rich importer isn't making a killing — the money goes directly back into the project and the community. Contributing to a program like this, either though buying a product, or making a donation is an excellent way of making a positive impact on Cambodia.

The SWDC also runs a restaurant which is next to the boutique. The menu is small and simple, including a spaghetti carbonara which looks and tastes nothing like the real thing, but it's all for a good cause.

Wat Phnom, Stung Treng Province
The name has been taken from the main temple in Phnom Penh. It is one of the major places where you can socialize in the late afternoon time and early evening. This river road links with a rural road, which is pleasant and beautiful. Therefore it is the ideal road where you can walk or jog anytime of the day.

Bou Sra Waterfall, Stung Treng Province
It is located 43 km away to the north of Stung Treng in the Pich Chinda District. It is most wonderful waterfall in Mondulkiri Province. This particular place has an ambience which is very calm, cool and refreshing. As a result it has become a very famous spot for picnicking.

Fresh Water Dolphin, Stung Treng Province
Presently the dolphins mostly live in the rivers and water bodies of Stung Treng and Kratie regions. The site of these dolphins is really amazing and fun to look at.

Kampi Resort, Stung Treng Province
It is one of the significant natural resorts in Stung Treng. It is the main water body where the fresh water Mekong dolphins reside.

Rum Near Waterwall, Stung Treng Province
This waterfall is situated 5 km away from Mondulkiri region at Rum Near district. On both roadside, you can take the pleasure of watching the beautiful sceneries of the local plantations like rubber, coffee and cashew nuts.

O'Svay and Preah Rumkel, Stung Treng Province
Among the eco-tourism destinations in Cambodia, Stung Treng province is one of the great potential areas,  with untouched natural beauty containing  O’Russey Kandal, O’Svay and Preah Rumkel communities."

These eco-communities were put as the begining line for conservation their nature beauty and rehabuilitation for communities to served as the tourist needs. Today, the Royal Government of Cambodia is concentrate for promoting eco-tourism there. There’re many constructing linking infrastructures to those destinations.

In the purpose to develop eco-tourism, local committees in the O’Russey Kandal area and at Sopheakmith, organized their areas to become attractive destinations for both local visitors and foreign tourists.

"Mlup Baitong Organization encourages communities by providing them environmental training courses such as community leadership skills, how to protect environment, how to serve guests and food sanitation." "In order to build huts for the tourists, the community asked for money from Baitong. Baitong checked to see if this was a reasonable proposal.

From observation, most of visitors from Stung Treng province, Kratie and Phnom Penh also come daily to visit O’Russey Kandal, just 27 kilometers from the town. On the weekend, around 15-20 motorists visit here. But for national festivals like Khmer New Year, Phum Ben day or the Water Festival, there are thousands of local tourists visiting.
