Kep is on a small headland and has a 6km palm-fringed road extending along the coastline. On top of the hill near the beach is one of King Sihanouk’s many palaces, constructed in the early 1990s. Before his overthrow in 1970. Kep was one of Sihanouk’s favourite spots in Cambodia; he used to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries on an outlying island nicknamed Ile des Ambassadeurs. He perhaps harboured thoughts of retirement here, but his poorhealth and Cambodia’s political instability has meant that he’s never actually stayed at his palace, which remains unfurnished.

After several false starts, Kep finally seems to be rising from the ashes, with several up-market hotels open or under construction and plenty of budget bungalows popping up on the hillside above the former town. The beach itself is rather scruffy, but it never was a natural sandy bay – before the war, white sand was shipped in from Sihanouk Ville to keep up appearances. Thirty years on, it is crying out for a clean. Kep may be little more than a shadow of its former self, but there is a certain atmosphere that draws Cambodians back again and again.

Koh Tonsay, Kep City
Koh Tonsay is a short boat ride off the coast of Kep and is so named because locals say it resembles a rabbit – an example of what too much local brew can do to your immigration. It has several beaches – all considerably nicer than those at Kep – and it is possible to stay with local families, as long as you can agree on a price for food and lodging (most families can arrange seafood spread with little notice). There are now a couple of basic guesthouses here that have proper beds and mosquito nets. Malaria is prevalent on most islands off Cambodia’s coast, so come prepared with a bucketful of repellent.

There are several other small islands beyond Koh Tonsay, including Koh Pos, but locals won’t take foreigners much beyond here, as it’s very close to the sea border with Vietnam. As this border is still a contentious issue between the two countries, don’t expect a friendly welcome should you stay into Vietnamese waters; locals say machine-gun fire is more likely.

Kampong Trach, Kep City
Kampong Trach practically vanished from the map of Cambodia during the early 1990s, as Khmer Rouge forces were in control of the hills that surround the town. The end of the civil war brought it back to life and it is now drawing a small number of visitors to its caves and Wats. The town itself has little to attract the visitor, but may grow in stature if and when the border with Vietnam at Ha Tien opens to overland traffic.

The main reason to come to Kampong Trach is to visit Wat Kirisan, a modern temple built at the foot of Phnom Sor (White Mountain), a karst formation riddled with numerous caves and passages. From the Wat there is an underground passage to the center of the karst formation, where there is another shrine. From here, other caves lead through the hill. It is easy to explore the basic passages unaided, provided you carry a torch, but anyone planning on delving deeper into the network of caves should find a local guide.
